The next owner is on a tighter budget,so the first service gets done properly by Volvo with few problems but the cost will be noted. I found milky oil in my 290 duo props in Newcastle, phoned my then trusted mechanic to meet me in Hull for an hour lift out, where it could be easily seen the shaft had worn away where the seal rubs 10 000 miles , many in the sandy muddy River Humber and East coast waters. The T37 I had with kad44's on outdrives was ok, but my d6-350s on dph's have had a fairly high cost of ownership thus far, although when taken in the context of the overall value of the boat, it's kinda in line with what you'd expect. Biggest risk is water ingression. The patented bushing made of a naval brass reduces vibrations, stress on the drivetrain components and prevents corrosion by galvanically isolating the stainless-steel propeller from the aluminum drive casting. Not sure what the recommended period is,perhaps on condition but when and not if they do fail, its water in the whirly bits and the bills that go with it.
Are you sure they werent looking for work Nick? And every now and then you'll have some big expense in my case I've variously had shaft seals, steering rams, steering hoses, pitted props, trim rams, gear selectors. . Perfectly matched pitch and camber distribution contributes to excellent propeller grip, optimal operational efficiency, safe and predictable handling. Then make sure you stick to the service schedule without deviation. Give us a call and we can walk you through what will fit your boat best. More control, more functions, more fun on the water.
Type K — Stainless-steel Duoprop propellers Specifically designed for the Volvo Penta Forward Drive. Should you need further assistance, you can always turn to Volvo Penta Action Service, with support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in 28 languages. But still servicing over the years until you decide to replace, is very different. But hell-they have been making them since the 60s I think, so they cant be that bad. If in doubt change them now. I am quite good at repairs.
Worth saving, printing out and keeping somewhere. And from an engineering perspective, their design is just plain wrong. All was still good when he replaced the engines and legs 3 years later. This year I notice the rubber flap is starting to split so that will be replaced as part of it's next full service etc. Thank you Bluegrass and other members.
I would say get as new as you can and one that has been well looked after. Does anyone do an exchange and fit as I live in the Frozen North near Kendal and the boat is 300 miles away in Southampton and I would want the job done down there immediatly after purchase. When I hit a drift net with a Volvo Penta 290 outdrive it cost almost £5000 to repair. Ive always had shaft drive boats so I must be a few grand up over the years! The high-performance blade geometry and great strength ensure maximum grip and maneuverability. I know there are probably shaft drive boats that meet those criteria but they are few and far between. And I am sending you a private message about it. So no knackered drives because you caught a fishing line and didn't notice there is water in the drive. Squeeze casting and special high-strength aluminum alloy render them stronger and more durable than traditional die-cast propellers. Is it really that expensive?. It provides better acceleration and higher top speed through greater strength and thinner blades versus a comparable aluminum propeller.
. Drives without needs to have a level-plug removed - and must be out of the water. I did insist on going to look at the groove, and quizzing them about options for reworking the shaft, but they were fairly insistent that there was no other option. Complete with a shock-absorbing rubber bushing and galvanic isolation in the hub. I know its too late now, but google 'speedsleeve'. The purpose is to get as much thrust as possible out of every single drop of fuel.
Grease for propeller components Volvo Penta water-resistant grease is designed to provide excellent adhesion, water resistance and load-carrying properties, and long-term protection against corrosion. I'll be very sorry to see it go. The reason I was looking for an out-drive was that I was after a planing hull and the advantage that the boat can dry out. Four layers of paint ensure excellent anti-corrosion performance. These propellers are made of a strong and durable stainless-steel to provide excellent acceleration and top speed. Similarly the Mercruiser Alpha 1 drive has a dog tooth clutch - no cone to wear out or need adjusting.
